There are a lot of myths out there about braces, which can often be a cause for concern for patients looking to invest in a straight smile. In order to clear up these myths, Dr. Alamir and Beauty Smile Orthodontics wants to help you better understand what is fact and what is fiction.

Only kids can wear braces. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, 20% of all orthodontic patients are adults, making braces not just for kids. One can never outgrow the benefits of orthodontic treatments, especially if you have crooked teeth, alignment or bite issues.

You are not allowed to play sports or play an instrument with braces. Simply because you are undergoing orthodontic treatments, does not mean that you cannot still participate in extracurricular activities. When playing sports, a protective mouth guard to can protect your teeth, with our without braces. And while the physical structure of braces might make playing certain instruments a bit more difficult, it simply takes just a little practice in order to get back into the hang of it.

The tighter the braces, the faster the treatment. Some patients think that increasing the tightness of braces will make their teeth straighten faster, decreasing the time spent wearing them. However, this is not the case at all. While you will be required to have tightenings during your treatment, too much force can damage your teeth, as well as the surrounding tissues, which may lead to more time spent wearing braces.

Braces are embarrassing and unattractive. With the variety of braces available today, you do not have to worry about your orthodontic treatment being unattractive. Traditional braces, which have improved aesthetically over time, clear aligners, clear ceramic braces, and lingual braces are just a few of the treatment options that can both straighten your teeth, as well as giving you a confident smile.

After your braces, your teeth will be straight forever. Unfortunately, this is a myth. Since your teeth are connected to your mouth with fibers, these elastic fibers will shift and move, often trying to move your teeth back to their original positions, even after your braces come off.  In order to prevent this from happening, you will likely need to wear an orthodontic retainer that has been made specifically for your smile.
